From Intention to Impact

The Sustainability Consortium

Annual Report

2024-2025

Executive Letter

As I reflect on my 16 years at The Sustainability Consortium, I find we are at a pivotal moment in our journey. Looking back, it’s clear that our founding vision – bringing the full supply chain together to tackle complex business and environmental challenges – has proven both prescient and powerful. Looking forward, we see unprecedented opportunities to deepen our impact through our unique academic meets industry model.

The past year has seen global supply chains tested by a myriad of challenges from climate disruptions to regulatory shifts to resource constraints. Yet in these challenges, we’ve witnessed the extraordinary resilience of our members and THESIS participants who recognize that operational efficiency and environmental performance are fundamentally interconnected. Our approach of identifying high-impact opportunities, fostering collaboration and driving concrete actions continues to help organizations strengthen their competitive position while making measurable environmental progress.

This year’s report highlights how TSC’s uniquely collaborative model, powered by Arizona State University’s world-class research capabilities, delivers practical insights and tools that help companies and organizations navigate today’s complex business landscape, from adapting to shifting regulations to optimizing resources amid economic pressures. The companies that thrive tomorrow will be those making strategic decisions today that simultaneously improve business resilience and sustainability performance.

As we move forward, we remain committed to our fundamental principle: that by bringing diverse stakeholders together around shared evidence and practical tools, we can help companies build more resilient and efficient supply chains that deliver multiple returns for business, society and the environment. Our network is unparalleled and together TSC members and THESIS participants continue to lead the way in accountability, transparency, and sustainability. It is an honor to work with our members, partners, and staff to steward this incredible organization toward our mission of “all products sustainable.”

The companies that thrive tomorrow will be those making strategic decisions today that simultaneously improve business resilience and sustainability performance.

TSC’s Uniqueness

Full Supply Chain Collaboration Powered by Academic Research

As an initiative of Arizona State University (ASU), ranked #1 in innovation by U.S. News & World Report for ten consecutive years, TSC brings a unique approach to sustainability challenges. Unlike traditional sustainability initiatives that often operate by sector or issue, TSC leverages ASU’s world-class research capabilities and innovative methodologies to bring together retailers, suppliers, NGOs and academic institutions to address challenges across global supply chains. Additionally, TSC’s 15-year partnership with Wageningen University, ranked #1 globally in agriculture and forestry for 10 consecutive years, brings world-class EU policy and research expertise to TSC’s tools and members.

TSC’s Network is most important, representing the end-to-end supply chain and all the way to the consumer. Nothing else has the full supply chain in the room. In terms of impact, that’s the impact to leverage.

Laura Phillips

Senior Vice President of Sales, MGA Entertainment

formerly Senior Vice President of Sustainability at Walmart and TSC Board Member emeritus.

This science-based approach stands in marked contrast to other organizational models that typically engage with companies on a project-by-project basis. By embedding our work within ASU’s research infrastructure, we can apply rigorous academic methodologies while maintaining a strong focus on practical implementation.

TSC’s comprehensive approach

has remained steady and relevant in times of uncertainty:

Research-backed problem-solving

By engaging stakeholders from across the value chain and leveraging ASU and Wageningen’s research capabilities, TSC identifies evidence-based leverage points that might be missed in more limited collaborations.

Scale and efficiency

Resources developed through TSC’s academic, industry, and NGO partnerships can be implemented across multiple supply chains, avoiding the fragmentation that comes from company-by-company approaches.

Knowledge integration

TSC combines ASU and Wageningen’s academic research with industry expertise and on the ground implementation knowledge to create practical, evidence-based tools.

TSC’s mission to transform global supply chains is supported by ASU’s commitment to sustainability and cutting-edge research. As global challenges become more complex and interconnected, TSC’s collaborative model offers a powerful framework for developing solutions that can work at scale.

THESIS 2024

Closing the Gap Between Intention and Impact

THESIS is no longer just a reporting tool, it’s a catalyst for implementation. With enhanced tools, stronger partnerships and clearer expectations, THESIS is equipping supply chains to turn sustainability commitments into meaningful results.

Across climate, circularity and nature, our data shows a consistent pattern: ambition is high, but execution is lagging. THESIS is closing that gap by helping companies not only measure progress, but make progress.

beyond compliance

THESIS: A Strategic Enabler

THESIS has traditionally been seen as a retailer-driven initiative, and with good reason. In 2024, 95% of suppliers said they participated because a buyer requested it, reinforcing the powerful role that buyers play in driving engagement.

But something new is happening: suppliers aren’t just responding to pressure, they’re seeing opportunity. THESIS is becoming a strategic asset.

THESIS responses tell a new story: suppliers are using THESIS to improve performance, guide investment and differentiate themselves in the market.

THESIS responses tell a new story: suppliers are using THESIS to improve performance, guide investment and differentiate themselves in the market.

TSC has helped us by sharing data and talking points and we have used that to communicate about our THESIS ranking on social media and more.

Diego Borrego and the team at AlEn utilized all the supplier support TSC offers, from TSC’s Help Desk to attending THESIS Live webinars, suppliers’ training, and 1:1 Q&A!

Grupo AlEn

2025 THESIS Performance Award – Best Effort

With THESIS, suppliers are:

agsdix-smt1-check

Identifying high-impact improvement opportunities

agsdix-smt1-check

Benchmarking against industry peers

agsdix-smt1-check

Structuring internal sustainability initiatives

agsdix-smt1-check

Demonstrating progress to multiple stakeholders

This aligns with what suppliers expect from buyers: 55% anticipate that buyers will track progress on corporate goals using THESIS data, 40% expect performance-based rewards through contracts or placement and 38% look for recognition as top performers.

THESIS has evolved into a shared platform for business value creation, not just value reporting.

Climate & Circularity

Bridging Critical Gaps

Climate

The Scope 3 Challenge in Climate Action

Climate leadership requires more than bold goals, it demands credible action across the full value chain. While climate change and circular economy initiatives have gained significant momentum, our THESIS data uncovers critical gaps between ambition and implementation.

Out of 100% of suppliers, 51% of suppliers report having established climate goals, most efforts still focus on direct emissions. Out of that 51%:

65% focus on reducing absolute Scope 1&2 emissions
49% are increasing renewable energy use
Only 27% have set Scope 3 absolute reduction targets
Just 26% have established net zero emissions goals

Disclosure and verification compound the challenge:

  • 52% can disclose Scope 1 and 2 absolute emission values
  • 28% can disclose Scope 3 absolute emission values
  • 1/3  just one-third verify any emissions through third parties

Top barriers to setting climate goals:

  • 40% indicate they are planning to in the next 2 years
  • 25% indicate it’s important but not an immediate priority
  • 13% indicate a lack of resources

Insight

Many companies are willing—but not yet able. This is where TSC plays a critical role.

TSC is meeting this readiness with:

agsdix-smt1-check

Global, standardized metrics for comparability

agsdix-smt1-check

Peer learning and technical guidance

agsdix-smt1-check

Improvement opportunities for high-impact hotspots

Circularity

Momentum and Blind Spots

Circularity is gaining traction: 54% of companies now have circularity goals but depth and focus vary significantly.  More efforts involve packaging circularity than product circularity.

While packaging initiatives are important, there’s a risk of stopping at the easy wins. Durable goods, consumables or reusable packaging present untapped opportunities for greater circularity impact.

Key Question: Are companies targeting the most strategic levers or just the most accessible ones?

The challenge isn’t setting the goal – it’s finding the resources and expertise to deliver on it

- THESIS 2024 Respondent

From Commitment to Execution

Setting goals is a start but implementation is the finish line. THESIS 2024 highlights that while many companies have targets, less than half have comprehensive implementation plans, and public disclosure is still limited.

To close this gap, TSC is:

agsdix-smt1-check

Standardizing metrics across buyers

agsdix-smt1-check

Supporting peer-to-peer learning

agsdix-smt1-check

Connecting companies to technical support

agsdix-smt1-check

Providing practical recommendations for action

With these interventions, THESIS helps turn good intentions into real world impact.

Nature Commitments: A Business Imperative

Nature remains a critical blind spot in business strategy. In 2024, 59% of companies still lack nature-related goals.

For those with goals, water is the most common focus, followed by deforestation, biodiversity, and affected communities. Water efforts typically focus on reducing use and pollution, while deforestation goals often align with global standards. Biodiversity strategies center on minimizing operational impacts, and community-related commitments emphasize respecting human and Indigenous rights.

Nature-related risks – from biodiversity loss to water scarcity – are intensifying. Yet most companies are underestimating them or failing to manage them across their value chains.

Even where commitments exist, approaches vary significantly.

Opportunity: Nature is the next frontier in supply chain sustainability. As biodiversity loss and water scarcity grow more material, companies need to move beyond good intentions to real safeguards – and fast.

THESIS 2024 conclusion

Turning Data into Results

THESIS has always been about more than measurement. It’s about helping companies act on what matters and delivering real outcomes across the value chain.

In 2024, that mission accelerated. THESIS is transforming goals into business results and data into impact.

THESIS is where sustainability goals become business results.

THESIS Spotlight

Driving Impact Across Retail Value Chains

As detailed in THESIS 2024 Insights, THESIS is enabling final manufacturers to not only measure sustainability but to act on it, turning goals into business results. THESIS is also empowering buyers to integrate sustainability into their business operations in strategic, measurable ways.

TSC’s knowledge base and assessment system, THESIS, one of the world’s largest consumer goods sustainability databases and reporting platforms, continues to demonstrate its versatility and value across retail value chains. Whether it’s advancing net zero readiness, building regenerative agriculture strategies or embedding sustainability into private brands’ portfolios, THESIS provides the science-based backbone for impact at scale.

Walgreens Boots Alliance

Collaboratively Working Towards Net Zero

Walgreens Boots Alliance Global Sourcing (WBA) exemplifies how retailers are using THESIS not simply as a data collection platform, but as a strategic tool to operationalize their climate commitments.

To support WBA’s net zero goals, they were able to take the THESIS data and incorporate into their supplier-specific scorecards. These scorecards now fuel supplier conversations and inform decision-making.

WBA are using THESIS as a dialogue enabler, positioning sustainability as a shared agenda with their suppliers – anchored in data and aligned with long-term business objectives.

“The data helped us develop a baseline that will inform the future direction for our nature work,”

explained Mark Eastham with Ahold Delhaize USA.

Ahold Delhaize USA recognizes an opportunity to extend THESIS further. The data is expected to enable Ahold Delhaize USA to identify and establish additional KPIs – while measuring, managing and improving current nature-focused efforts.

Ahold Delhaize USA

Leveraging Insights to Help Shape Key Sustainability Strategies

In 2024, Ahold Delhaize USA leveraged THESIS custom analytics as inputs to help shape a forward-looking strategy centered on two key focus areas: nature and regenerative agriculture. Ahold Delhaize USA has taken a science-based, system-wide approach, turning environmental data into action while reinforcing its broader sustainability goals.

THESIS insights on key environmental indicators – such as soil health, pollinator health, and land conversion – informed a foundational baseline to help assess value chain readiness, streamline data requests, gain valuable insights into emerging areas and impact areas with the greatest return on investment.

Growing Impact for Measurement, Reporting and Impact Evolution

These retailer partnerships demonstrate an evolution for THESIS from a measurement tool to a strategic resource that illuminates opportunities for retailers to reduce resource consumption and create meaningful impact reductions across their supply chains. The diverse applications, from net-zero preparedness and regenerative agriculture to innovative own-brand integration, showcase its adaptability to different buyer contexts and sustainability priorities.

beyond thesis

TSC’s Collaborative Impact

Collective Action Initiative

Suppliers participating in THESIS assessments consistently emphasize the need for greater collaboration to address critical sustainability challenges. In response, TSC launched the Collective Action program to foster meaningful connections among members and partners in a pre-competitive space. This initiative is designed to catalyze progress on shared sustainability goals by leveraging the power of collaboration. Insights from THESIS data highlight circularity and Scope 3 emissions as top priorities for suppliers—issues that are central to our current project portfolio. Guided by leading sustainability science and informed by member needs, TSC’s Collective Action projects deliver measurable impact through cutting-edge research, innovative tools, and peer-to-peer learning opportunities.

Small Format Initiative

In 2024, TSC continued to lead efforts to improve recyclability of small format plastic packaging and products. Small format refers to (non-glass) items smaller than a fist that fall through the glass breaker screens at the beginning of the sort process in materials recovery facilities, ending up in glass reprocessing streams as contamination.Through targeted research and advocacy, TSC laid the groundwork for new initiatives capable of implementing on-the-ground sortation solutions. Our work included data modeling and waste audits at glass recycling facilities to evaluate the return on investment for collecting and processing these materials. We also led the development of a standardized auditing methodology to enhance future data quality, examined the potential impacts of extended producer responsibility (EPR) legislation, and shared our findings at key industry events, including GreenBiz Circularity and Amazon’s Meeting of the Minds.

Scope 3

In spring 2024, TSC launched the Adaptive Action Lab webinar series to help members navigate the complexity and uncertainty of Scope 3 greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions accounting and reduction. Through this series, participants explored key concepts such as precision versus accuracy, managing competing tensions, and the dynamics of finite and infinite games—all applied to the challenges of Scope 3. To sustain momentum, TSC established a dedicated Scope 3 discussion group, creating an ongoing forum for expert insights and peer learning. These convenings surfaced shared challenges across our network and highlighted critical industry gaps, such as the need for better tools to calculate consumer use-phase emissions.

Farmers for Soil Health Marketplace

TSC serves as a key partner in Farmers for Soil Health, a collaboration between the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation, commodity organizations, technical assistance providers, and other stakeholders working to advance soil health by encouraging farmers to adopt cover crops and other conservation practices. TSC’s primary contribution is connecting consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies with Marketplace, an innovative platform that enables direct engagement with growers in their supply sheds. Through Marketplace, companies can incentivize on-farm conservation practices and credibly claim the resulting environmental benefits toward their sustainability goals. In 2024, the program made significant strides, enrolling more farmers and co-developing a user-centered Marketplace experience in partnership with corporate stakeholders.

Responsible Pest Management

In 2024, TSC developed a new grower-facing survey designed to complement our suite of tools promoting the adoption of Responsible Pest Management (RPM) practices. Developed in collaboration with TSC members and partners, this self-assessment tool builds on our foundational RPM framework to help growers evaluate their current practices and identify key areas for improvement. As several industry certification standards increasingly incorporate RPM criteria, this tool serves as a valuable entry point for growers aiming to enhance operational performance and meet certification requirements. It also delivers business value by strengthening communication between growers, retailers, and CPG companies around sustainable pest management strategies.

Sustainability Leadership Institute (SLI)

TSC’s Sustainability Leadership Institute equips members with practical models and methods to navigate complexity and uncertainty, helping them move from systems thinking to systems action. Each year, we gather in person for a one-of-a-kind retreat that blends deep connection, nature immersion, and collaborative problem-solving around the “wicked” challenges of sustainability.

The 2024/ 2025 retreat was held at the Whitney Laboratory for Marine Bioscience in St. Augustine, Florida. Participants explored the rich biodiversity of the Intracoastal Waterway, learning about estuarine ecosystems, coquina rock formations, and the resilience of resurrection ferns. We paddled through mangrove shallows, dipped our toes in the Atlantic, and experienced the unique charm of “vintage Florida.” Guided by Third Horizon, we also turned inward, reflecting on our values as a strategy to combat burnout and sustain momentum in our work.

We also hosted an Adaptive Action Lab webinar series and introduced a standing “Power of Question” exercise—both designed to help participants reframe challenges and unlock new perspectives. These additions extended learning throughout the year, making the program more accessible, continuous, and impactful. Together, these experiences equipped participants with the mindset, tools, and community needed to lead transformational change in sustainability.

2024 THESIS Suppliers

A Network Of Manufacturers Driving Year-Over-Year Progress

THESIS is more than a reporting tool – it’s a growing network of final manufacturers committed to understanding and improving their supply chain impacts. These companies are doing the hard work of identifying priority sustainability issues, learning how to measure them consistently, and investing in greater transparency. They’re not just checking boxes – they’re building the foundation for year-over-year progress that buyers can trust.

In 2024, 1,183 manufacturers submitted data through the THESIS platform. Of these participants:

  • 11.4% were categorized as “Good” performers, meaning they demonstrated strong performance across key indicators, including quantitative data disclosure, hotspot management, and improvement activities.
  • 79.5% were categorized as “Average” performers, meaning they met baseline expectations, disclosed some impact data, and showed signs of progress but still have ample room for improvement.
  • 9.2% were categorized as “Poor” performers, meaning they provided limited data, disclosed minimal or no performance metrics, and have demonstrated minimal to no improvement.

These ratings are based on standardized scoring criteria that evaluate transparency and performance on material issues. Each year, we encourage suppliers not only to assess themselves, but to publicly disclose their results—signaling a deeper level of accountability to their partners, customers, and peers.

These companies have chosen to disclose their THESIS results publicly in 2024. This transparency is a signal to the market: these suppliers are ready for deeper engagement.

THESIS represents a growing ecosystem of final manufacturers voluntarily disclosing sustainability data beyond ESG that buyers across retail, goods not for resale (GNFR), foodservice, maritime, and hospitality can plug into. The foundation is already there – what’s needed now is continued engagement and alignment from buyers to harness this momentum and accelerate the shift towards sustainable products across all sectors.
