TEMPE, ARIZ., – September 14th, 2012. BASF, a long-time member of The Sustainability Consortium has made huge waves in the world of product sustainability – including it’s most recent project that includes a partnership with the Seattle Mariners as the sports world works to develop a more sustainable way to distribute snacks. On September 5th, BASF and the Seattle Mariners distributed the iconic snack of the American pastime, peanuts, in a new prototype packaging developed with BASF’s advanced biopolymer technology. The first 10,000 fans at Safeco Field that day received a free package of peanuts in a 100 percent compostable snack bag.
“Flexible packaging with this BASF technology is a big step forward for the snack food industry,” said Kimberley Schiltz, Market Development Manager Consumer Packaging, BASF. “It means that popular snack foods can be brought to market in compostable packaging that delivers needed shelf-life at a competitive price point, with a more sustainable ‘end-of-life’ solution than with conventional packaging materials.”
BASF’s biopolymers technology is designed to meet the expectations of consumers and provide a viable solution to the snack food packaging industry, which has been unachieved to date. “BASF is committed to moving forward in sustainability and is taking a leadership role in this area,” said Mike Faupel, Operations Director at The Sustainability Consortium. “Their work with our packaging sector among others has been tremendous – we look forward to collaborating with them on new projects.”
BASF will be one of the many member companies to attend The Sustainability Consortium’s Inaugural Member Summit, October 9th-11th in Tempe, Arizona. The Member Summit will allow TSC’s 90 + members and other crucial stakeholders to analyze TSC’s sustainability measurement and reporting work as well as allow Sector Working Groups, Consortium Working Groups and Advisory Councils to engage in critical dialogue on how to advance TSC’s mission.
